I'm creating my own martial arts pilgrimage to Japan to re-visit the foundations of the arts, in the physically, mentally, spiritually
and philosophically on an 8-day journey from Tokyo to Kyoto.
It is a deeply personal
path of rediscovery through the heart of martial arts
as I feel its important to constantly keep learning and maintaining the
'white belt' mindset of absorbing everything.
The chance to walk the ancient
Nakasendo Trail &
Kiso Valley where samurai, merchants, and nobles once travelled is truly inspirational.
To be able to immerse oneself in an environment surrounded by
sacred shrines, natural onsens, mountain forests, cultural experience, martial exchanges
while staying in traditional ryokans, certainly sets the scene for some pretty deep exploration.
It is something I wanted to share with more people, but this first exploration of the 'Wandering Warriors' has just booked out.
I will be away for 10 days or more in March 2026 and will share our discoveries as we capture the journey on film.
To understand Mike Stone is to understand the evolution of the modern warrior. He is a figure whose name is etched into the very soul of martial arts history, a pioneer who not only dominated its most ferocious era but transcended the physical to become a respected author, Hollywood influencer, philosopher, and wellness mentor. His journey is a testament to the idea that the path of the martial artist is not a destination, but a lifelong pilgrimage of discovery.
Mike Stone’s legend began in the crucible of 1960s and 70s American karate—an era defined by its ferocity and raw, unpadded courage. Known respectfully as the "Blood and Guts" era, tournaments were brutal tests of will, skill, and spirit. It was here that Stone, often nicknamed "The Animal" or "Tiger Mike Stone" for his relentless and aggressive fighting style, carved out a legacy that remains unparalleled.
With a foundation in Shorin-ryu, he rose to prominence with astonishing speed, earning his black belt in a record six months. But it was his competitive career that became the stuff of legend. Competing in an era of icons, Stone achieved a feat that has never been duplicated: he retired as the only black belt to remain undefeated in individual competition, amassing an incredible 91 consecutive black belt victories in both kata (forms) and kumite (fighting). He conquered every major tournament of the time, from the Internationals in California to the World Championships in Chicago, cementing his status as the sport's first true superstar.
His prowess was twice recognized by the prestigious Black Belt Magazine, inducting him into its Hall of Fame as "Fighter of the Year" and later as "Instructor of the Year."
As the 1980s dawned, Stone turned his focus to Hollywood, bringing his authentic understanding of martial arts to the silver screen. He was the creative force behind the film that single-handedly ignited the global "ninja craze." His original screenplay, initially titled Dance of Death, was developed and released as the seminal classic, Enter the Ninja. This film, and the subsequent American Ninja series he was involved with, introduced the mystique of the ninja to a Western audience, creating a cultural phenomenon that influenced a generation of martial artists and action-film enthusiasts.
Behind the camera, Stone was a multi-talented force, lending his expertise as a fight choreographer, stunt coordinator, actor, and producer. His work set a new standard for martial arts action, combining cinematic flair with the brutal efficiency he had mastered in the competitive arena.
Beyond the dojo and the film set, Mike Stone cultivated a rich inner world, expressing his insights through the written word. He is a prolific author and poet, exploring themes that range from martial arts philosophy to the deeper questions of human existence.
His seminal book, American Eclectic Karate, codified his unique approach to the art. However, his writings extend far beyond technique. Through his poetry and other works, he delves into the heart of the warrior's code, examining the principles of integrity, self-knowledge, and personal responsibility. His words have graced the pages and covers of countless martial arts magazines, and his interviews have become valued sources of wisdom, not just on fighting, but on living a purposeful life.
Today, Mike Stone has synthesized a lifetime of experience—from the brutal honesty of the tournament floor to the creative expression of filmmaking and the quiet contemplation of writing—into his role as a philosopher and wellness mentor. His teachings have evolved from mastering an opponent to mastering the self.
This evolution is embodied in his unique 9 Levels of Power Program, a transformative framework designed to help individuals reclaim their power, find clarity, and build a life of profound fulfillment. Through his courses, videos, and mentorship, he guides students to understand the deep connection between mind, body, and spirit. He challenges them to move beyond the physical and to cultivate the inner attributes that define a true master: humility, compassion, courage, and an unwavering commitment to personal growth.
Mike Stone's biography is not simply a list of achievements; it is the story of a man who has lived many lives within one. He is the undefeated champion, the Hollywood visionary, the thoughtful poet, and the wise mentor. He represents the ultimate journey of the martial artist—one that begins with a fight, but ultimately leads to a path of peace, understanding, and a desire to uplift others.
Mike a co-journeyman shares exclusive elements from his book and program, The Nine Levels of Power, on this path.
This journey is not about new techniques. It’s about remembering why we began.
Today’s martial arts world is rich in techniques, sharper moves, and faster drills. But something has been lost. The heart of martial arts—respect, humility, integrity, compassion, loyalty, and courage—has been overshadowed by trophies, belts, business, and ego.
As teachers, many of us began by sharing martial arts as a complete way of life. Over time, the pressures of society and instant gratification led us to compromise.
Students demanded speed, power, and recognition—while the deeper qualities of the art faded.

Not just a journey through Japan, but through yourself
This pilgrimage is designed for martial arts masters who feel the call to go deeper—to reconnect with the timeless Code and to bring that essence back to their students and communities.
On this journey you will:
Validate your own knowledge by walking alongside masters who share the same dedication.
Find new depth within yourself through nature, reflection, and shared brotherhood.
Reclaim the Code of the Warrior as a living practice—not just tradition, but a way forward in a world that desperately needs it.
Awaken purpose and clarity so that you return home with more than experiences—you return with transformation.
Feel something essential has been lost in the martial arts world?
Want to validate their own knowledge while discovering deeper truths. Do you seek to bring clarity, purpose, and integrity back to their art and their students.

Never just about recognition—but about awakening.
Never just about training the body—but shaping character, spirit, and humanity.

This is more than a trip; it is an intimate pilgrimage!
We are not seeking tourists; we are seeking torchbearers. We are calling upon established masters and leaders in the martial arts community who feel the pull of a deeper purpose.
This journey is for those who understand that their next evolution lies not in the physical, but in the spiritual, and who are committed to sharing that evolution with the world. Over 8 days, we will train, travel, and live in close proximity, sharing experiences that will challenge us physically, mentally, and spiritually.
The strength and harmony of our small fellowship are paramount to the success of this journey. To cultivate a supportive, respectful, and profoundly enriching environment for every participant, we ask for your thoughtful reflection on the following questions posed in our form. Your candid responses will help us curate a balanced and cohesive group, ensuring the experience is transformative for all. Please consider this not an application, but the first step of the journey itself.
We invite you to submit an application that tells us your story. We want to build a cohesive group of individuals ready to share, learn, and grow together.

For many this will be a once in a lifetime experience especially with the limited numbers. We are looking for a well-balanced group of martial arts leaders who are open minded to try new things, willing to share their experiences and accept guidance. We want to match individuals into a harmonious group to enhance everyone’s experience and goals.
